Victoria Glass was born in New York, raised in New Jersey and is currently living in Central Oregon. She creates Contemporary Paintings on Clear Plexiglas,using Reverse Imaging and also on White and Black Plexiglas. It is a coincidence but her last name is really Glass, thanks to her husband.
Her work centers on color, light and transparency, transforming realistic images of nature and people into abstract forms and shapes that convey a personal connection.
Victoria's need to create began as a young girl and has endured ever since. Her initial inspiration with Stained Glass Windows at Sunday Mass challenged her to emulate that same moving and mystical art form on Plexiglas.
She earned her BFA in Visual Communication from A.I.U.( American Intercontinental University Online) and an A.A.S. in Merchandising from Marymount College, Arlington, VA. Victoria has also completed the Mastery Art Program at Professional Artists Institute and finished classes in Art History and Photography.
Working as a Middle School Art Teacher in Siletz, Oregon and teaching Native American children opened her eyes to Native American culture and their traditions. Her Paintings centered on Pow Wow dancers and emboldened her love for bold, vibrant colors and emotional, spiritual energy.
She has presented in galleries and sold to private and public collectors in Oregon, Arizona, Washington, California and New York.
She has exhibited widely in her hometown of Prineville, Oregon, and has sold numerous commissioned works. Victoria also donates her paintings to Non-profit organizations and Cancer patients.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I call my paintings, "Abstract Realism". I am a Contemporary Artist who paints on Plexiglas, using Reverse Imaging. My symbolic, colorful images are interpreted by what captivates me in a blurred out photograph and echoes a subjective response to what I feel when I connect with that painting. My current themes are Figurative, Florals, Spirituality and Landscapes.
I begin my creative process by drilling holes into the Plexiglas, attaching wire and laying it flat on a table. I draw my design with a white glass paint marker. I squeeze or drip alcohol Inks and acrylics, sometimes adding metallic markers to define the composition.
Music, State of Mind, and Color guide me as I identify with images that move me emotionally and flow in an engaging manner. Sometimes mistakes are made and I have to scrape the paint off with a dough scraper to achieve the luminous effect I want. It is quite the workout!
I flip the painting back and forth from one side to the other to achieve the desired effect from the unpainted side. It is a challenging process but the transparency of the colors motivate me to successfully reach for the end result.
I Look, I Think, I Wait. Sometimes, I dance around to my music and close my eyes, then look at the painting again, waiting for that "aha" moment. I complete what needs to be done and decide if my work evokes a balance and rhythm that is physically and emotionally engaging.
The end result is coating and varnishing the painted side,and rewiring it, so it is ready for display.
